STUDENTS

Diamond Homeroom: Text @2oates
Materials for Class:
Requirements for students are:Writing Utensil (Pencils preferred)
Assessments:
Students will have several assessments over the course of each quarter. Formal assessments (65% of the student's grade) consist of major quizzes, projects, writing tasks, and tests. Science tests will typically be given on THURSDAYs. Students will also receive grades from daily classroom activities, labs, and homework (35% of the student's grade). All grades will be up-to-date on PowerSchool. Please feel free to contact me at any time over any academic or grading concerns.
Retests/Mastery Learning:
Retests are strongly encouraged for any student not meeting a minimum score of 79% on each academic objective. Students who receive less than an 79% will have the opportunity to retest to demonstrate mastery of concepts. In order to retest, students must attend at least 1 tutoring session to review material. Students retesting will only receive a maximum of 79% in the gradebook for retests.
Late Work:
Late work will be accepted. For each day the assignment is late, 10% will be deducted from the student's grade on the assignment for each day the assignment is missing. After 5 days, late work turned in will receive a maximum of 50%. If the student misses school for any reason, make up assignments should be handed in within 5 days of returning to school. All of these assignments are available under the lesson plan tab on the navigation bar of my website.
Homework/Flipped Classroom:
I try to limit the amount of homework your student brings home each evening. Homework assignments will be assigned, however they often will be in the form of digital media (such as short videos to preview the next concept of the unit). Under the "Flipped Classroom" tab on the navigation bar of my website, there will be links to assignments under dates they are due. These videos are often helpful tools for test review and can often clear up any lingering questions the student may have about an objective. Students are encouraged to buy an agenda in the school store and should record information from class there.
Classroom Volunteers:
I love having parents help out for our labs and hands-on activities. If you are interesting in volunteering in our classroom, please let me know. In order to volunteer, you must first register at: www.cmsvolunteers.com.
Tutoring:
Tuesdays: 7:45-8:45am
Please contact me via email [email protected] if you would like to schedule a special tutoring session.

Classroom Expectations
Beginning of class:
5 Class Rules:
Treat others how you want to be treated
Respect others belongings and space
Inspire greatness
Be Prepared
Engage in your learning

SCIENCE
Course Overview:
Students will study four major science units during the seventh grade school year. Each of the units provide ample opportunity for students to experience hands-on science in unique and exciting ways. The state curriculum can be found at NCDPI. A general overview of the units of study are as follows:
MATH
Materials Special to Math
Contact Information:
Our team of 7th grade teachers use email as our main source of communication. If possible, please provide us with your home or work email address. If you do not currently have an email address, please consider obtaining one. There are several services that provide free email accounts (www.yahoo.com, www.gmail.com, etc.). Please be sure to provide your email address to each teacher during the first week of school so you can be added to our distribution lists. You can expect to receive weekly or bi-weekly newsletters updating you on lessons, projects and other important announcements regarding our classes or your child. By far, the best way to contact us is through email. Generally, we will get back to you within 24 hours. Our email addresses can easily be accessed from the Ridge Road Middle School website.
Course Description:
We will begin the school year with a pre-test to determine what skills your child has currently mastered. Once, assessed students will be on a customized plan developed by the 7th grade teachers in order to help your child be successful in their math class. The assessment will be administered during class on Monday August 31, 2015. Below are the units that we will be covering this year:
7th Grade All Classes
7. NS (Number System) – Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers. (Involves decimals, fractions, integers and order of operations and will be used throughout each unit.)
7. RP (Ratio and Proportional Relationships) – Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems. (Involves proportional comparisons, unit rates, percents, scale drawings and similar triangles.)
7. EE (Expressions and Equations) – Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. (Involves integers, combining like terms, solving equations/inequalities and graphing)
7. G (Geometry) – Draw, construct, and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them. (Involves exploring circumference, area, composite/irregular figures, volume and surface area.)
7. SP (Statistics and Probability) – Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population. (Involves determining central tendencies (mean, median, mode, range and mean absolute deviation) and probability.)
7th Grade Honors
Each 7th Grade Honors class will incorporate the following 8th grade standards and the class will move at a much faster pace.
8. NS (Number System) – Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers. (Involves changing repeated decimals into fractions)
8. EE (Expressions and Equations) – Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and analyze linear equations. (Involves direct and indirect variation, slope, y-intercept, linear equations-algebraically/graphically)
8. G (Geometry) –Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem
If you would like further information or additional practice on any of these topics, you can google the topic (i.e. 7.EE) and several websites will come up. Feel free to visit our individual Weebly/Wiki pages for additional assistance.
